Performing in the Winter or Spring Showcase is an exciting, empowering, and confidence-building experience for our dancers. The students love showing their parents, family-members and friends what they’ve been learning in class and how hard they’ve worked to build their skills during the semester…plus they look absolutely adorable in their costumes.
At Dance Without Limits, we have two recitals each year: a Winter Showcase and Spring Showcase. These are big productions with a lot of moving parts – and while we work hard to keep everything as stress-free and simple for everyone involved, there are some things you can do to help us make sure everything runs smoothly for your child on their big day.
1. practice makes perfect
Dress Rehearsal is not only for your child! We want them to get a chance to see and feel comfortable on the big stage in full costume, but the rehearsal is also your opportunity to test run getting your child to the theater, in their costume, with hair (and make-up, if you’d like) ready.
2. bring an extra pair of tights
Dance tights are finicky, and seem to always rip, run, or stain at the worst times. You will never regret having an extra pair of tights with you – click here to order a pair.
3. name on everything – shoes, tights, costumes, headpiece
Shoes, tights, costumes, headpiece, bags…even if you think your child will be wearing it the entire time, make sure their name is on it.
4. secure the hair
Use hairspray and bobby pins to secure hair and headpieces. Make sure you practice in advance and let them shake their head and jump around – remember they’re dancing, not just standing there looking cute. If it stays, you’re set! If your dancer is in one of our ballet classes, watch Ms. Beth’s video on making and securing a ballet bun here.
5. purchase tickets in advance
Recital packages each include 3 tickets – one for the dancer and two for guests. Purchasing additional tickets in advance will save you money and the headache of trying to get them on the day of. If you haven’t already, preorder tickets here.
6. costume care
Costumes should be washed in cold water, in a garment bag and hung to dry only. If your child’s costume has a tutu, store it hanging upside-down and it will be fluffy and perky for the performance. Make sure your child isn’t wearing any underpants underneath her tights for the performance.
7. bring cash for concessions – and feed your dancer
Don’t let your little one go hungry or worse, hangry, at recital time! Bring cash for the concessions and keep little tummies full and happy.
8. take your little one for one last trip to the restroom before the show starts
Trust us on this one.
9. stay for the finale
The finale is one of the most fun and exciting parts of the performance for our kids. We get the chance to take the stage all together as a dance family, building camaraderie and sharing our joy with the audience. Don’t leave before your dancer gets a chance to join in on the fun!
10. read your handbook
We’ve put together a comprehensive handbook that answers questions you didn’t even know you had about the recital. If any additional questions arise, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always available to answer calls during our business hours and will certainly respond to messages on our Facebook page or sent via email.
