One of our Core Values here at Dance Without Limits is “Family First.” That is why we are introducing a new video series, Member Stories, where you can hear directly from some of our dancers and their family members about why they choose to learn, grow, and dance with us here at Dance Without Limits.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your dancer.
My name is Lisa Ladwig, and my daughter is Magdalena. Maggie is 9 years old and we have been coming to Dance Without Limits for 5 semesters now. We started in theLimitless Friends class, as Maggie has Down Syndrome. The next year we had a scheduling conflict, so she switched to Twinkle Stars where she had the opportunity to learn ballet and tap. This year we’ve been trying Lyrical, which has been a really good fit for her.
Why did you and Maggie choose dance?
Maggie has always loved music, ever since she was a baby. She has always loved doing motion songs and interacting with music, so dance came naturally to her. It’s a great way for her to move her body and get exercise and she just loves it – it’s something she really enjoys.
Why did you choose to dance at Dance Without Limits?
We decided to try DWL for the Limitless Friends class because it was a special needs class and it seemed like a good opportunity for Maggie to get some dance experience. That’s what initially got us in the door, and then we just fell in love with the studio and the people here.
What memories stand out from your time here at Dance Without Limits?
There are two moments that stood out to me as I thought about defining moments of our time here. The first is one day, when I was peeking in on class through the observation window, I saw Miss Beth working with Maggie. She was helping her to do something the right way – to do it properly. In a lot of other situations, people might just let Maggie do it her own way, but I just really appreciated that Beth took the time to encourage her and to help her to do it well and to do it right.
The other thing I love is the recitals. Maggie loves to be on stage. Her face just lit up with joy up there, and I felt like I might burst with pride at all that she had learned and accomplished, the friendships she has made, and the routines that she learned. It was a really joyous experience for us.
Why do you recommend Dance Without Limits?
I always highly recommend Dance Without Limits. I love that it is a place where dance is for everyone, it’s fun, encouraging, and the music and costumes are age appropriate. And I don’t feel that excellence has been compromised in promoting those things. There is a high standard for quality dance instruction, while still emphasizing these values that are important for children and families.
