We Believe Dance is for Everybody
When I opened Dance Without Limits here in Greer in 2016, I wanted to make sure that the culture of our studio was built on positivity and inclusivity. Not only did I want this to be a place welcoming to students of all ages with any level of dance experience, but it was also important to me to that our studio be inclusive and accessible to students of all abilities as well.
I have witnessed firsthand how beneficial dance is for all children, and as a studio owner and dance teacher, it’s both my privilege and my responsibility to make sure these benefits are accessible to everyone. That’s why one of the core values our studio is built on is that Dance is for Everybody.
Dance is good for all bodies.
While all forms of exercise and movement improve overall health and wellbeing, dance is special in that it combines physicality with music and artistic expression. The brain/body connection that is engaged when you dance provides a unique set of physical health benefits. Dancing improves:
- Muscle memory
- Body-Awareness and Balance
- Flexibility and Coordination
- Strength and Stamina
For children with restricted movement, dance is a form of exercise that can easily be adapted to their individual needs while still providing all of the benefits above. Dancing keeps growing bodies moving to be healthy, happy, focused, and strong, all in a social environment built on fun! Everyone deserves the chance to benefit from dance!
Dance is good for developing brains.
The physical benefits of dance are obvious, but the benefits extend well beyond that. Learning to dance engages the brain and requires blending thought and muscle memory at the same time as being a physical challenge.
In dance class, a child will build and strengthen the neuromuscular connections between their brain and their body. The physical benefits of this range from improvements in body awareness and sensorimotor integration to increased development, health, and cognitive skills. It’s science!
Dance is good for the heart and soul.
Just as importantly, to dance is a joy! Dancers learn to improve focus, release pent-up energy and express emotions in a healthy way. Dance is calming and improves overall mood for dancers of all ages – a tool that is particularly helpful for young children, especially children who struggle to communicate verbally.
Not only do I know that dance is beneficial for everyone, but I know that our dedication to inclusivity is beneficial to our studio as well. We don’t always do things the traditional way – different abilities mean thinking outside the box sometimes – and the results are beautiful!
